There is a reason that the YMCA is referred to as “America’s Favorite Swim Instructor.” For over a century, the YMCA has been teaching people to swim. In Y classes, not only are you taught in a caring way how to swim, but you also learn about safety and rescue skills, as well as water activities you can enjoy for a lifetime. A variety of class times and types are available to meet your family’s needs! Classes available for ages 6 months to adult, beginners to advanced. Swim lessons will be available morning, afternoon/evening, and on weekends. Pools are heated in the winter and chilled in the summer months. Enjoy 2 hours of exclusive use of our Longenbaugh pool. Enjoy our slides, basketball equipment, noodles, life jackets and more. YMCA Stingrays Swim TeamEach practice and swim meet attended is an opportunity for swimmers to set and reach aquatics goals in a positive and encouraging team environment. Team members must demonstrate the ability to swim 25 yards unassisted. Practices consist of swim drills, endurance drills, stroke development and minimal breaks from continuous swim. Season Rates: Scout ProgramThe YMCA Scout Program is designed for scouts that have the skills to meet the particular badge or swim level test, and to provide a place for the scout to show those skills to a person certified to sign off on the skills completed. We will provide a YMCA-certified Lifeguard and Swim Instructor. Qualifications we can accommodate: Girl Scout Swim Level test, Girl Scout Safe Boater test, Boy Scout 1st & 2nd Swim Class test, BSA Swim test, and Webelos Aquanaut Badge. SWIM LESSONSThe YMCA offers a wide range of swimming options for the whole family. Swimming builds self-confidence and develops the whole person - spirit, mind and body. Classes are divided into ability groups and trained instructors emphasize personal safety, swimming skills, endurance and social skills while guiding students with praise and encouragement. Swim Lesson Instructor to Participant Class RatiosParent/Child 1-12 Private/Semi-Private LessonsIdeal for apprehensive swimmers or those with specific needs for the individual attention you or your child needs to succeed. Experienced, certified instructors will work with you one-on-one to accomplish your specific goals. 30-minute lessons scheduled by appointment only. Private and semi-private lessons are offered in groups of 4, 6 or 8. Choose a group of 8 lessons for the price of 7. Spring 2010 Weekend Lessons
Weekday Swim LessonsAges: 6mos-Adult
PARENT/CHILD SWIM LESSONSAges: 6 months-4 years S.K.I.P.The parent/child classes are taught as a combined class for ages 6mos-36mos with the parent accompanying the child in the water. Skills are introduced at the child's development level and build on each other as the child progresses. Basic water skills are taught through fun songs and games. Class length: 30 minutes. Parent & Pike(Ages 3-4) No swimming experience required. For the child who isn't ready to be without their trusted adult in the water. Children adjust to water and develop independent movement. Teaches basic stroke and kicking skills, floating and pool safety. 30 minutes. Pike level class. PRESCHOOL CLASSESChildren must turn 3 by start of session. Ages: 3-5 Pike(Beginner) Children adjust to the water and develop independent movement. Teaches basic stroke and kicking skills, floating, and pool safety. Class length: 30 minutes. Eel(Advanced Beginner) For children who are comfortable in the water and able to swim 5 feet with face in the water and no flotation device. Children are taught to float, kick and perform progressive arm movements across the pool. Class length: 30 minutes. Ray(Advanced) For children who can swim 15 feet with face in the YOUTHChild must turn 6 by start of session. Ages: 6 & up Polliwog(Beginner) Swim placement required if the student has not taken YMCA swim lessons in the last year. Beginner level for those uncomfortable or inexperienced in the water. Teaches basic water skills, including gliding with face in water, floating and kicking. Guppy(Advanced Beginner) Swim placement required if student has not taken YMCA swim lessons in the last year. For children able to swim 20 feet without a flotation device. Teaches swimming on front, back and side and breathing while swimming. Minnow(Intermediate) Swim placement required if the student has not taken YMCA swim lessons in the last year. For children able to swim 25 yards on front and back with or without a flotation device. Teaches front crawl with rotary breathing, backstroke, sidestroke, beginning breaststroke. Fish(Advanced) Swim placement required if the student has not taken YMCA swim lessons in the last year. For children able to swim 25 yards of front crawl with rotary breathing, back crawl, sidestroke and rudimentary breaststroke. Refines breast stroke, teaches butterfly, open turns and improves other strokes. Class length: 45 minutes. ADULT CLASSESAges: 13+ Y Swim Lessons AdultYou've waited long enough! Get over that fear or tune up your swim skills with a 45-min lesson geared toward your level of comfort and ability. Quality lessons taught by caring and patient instructors.
